The Wings Over the Prairie festival, held each November in Stuttgart, features duck calling championships, childrens' rides downtown and a big Saturday shindig, the Duck Gumbo Cookoff.

But runners also flock to the annual event for the Great Duck Race 10K. In 2009, more than 230 runners from Arkansas and other states including Colorado, Tennessee, Georgia and New York competed in the event, which begins downtown and heads south, looping around the backside of the city's main retail disctrict, before returning north to end where it began.

The flat course gives contestants a smooth run and lots of scenery, including the possibility of seeing early morning ducks fluttering above the surrounding rice fields.

The video above features scenes from the 2009 event, including race winner James Bresette of Clinton and second-place finisher (and top women's runner) Leah Thorvilson of Little Rock in the home stretch.

Wings Over the Prairie is sponsored by the Stuttgart Chamber of Commerce. The Duck Gumbo Cookoff, which takes place on Saturday, attracts more than 1,000 visitors to sample the many duck gumbos conjured up as well as the all-afternoon entertainment under the big tents off Park Avenue.
